Istanbul.

The light of the Bosphorus

Evening over Bebek Bay. To the north, the walls of Rumeli Hisarı; across the water, Kandilli on the Asian shore.

41.0745° N · 29.0464° E

This is not a picture of Istanbul. It is Bebek, built on the real map: every street where OpenStreetMap draws it, every slope from the Copernicus survey, every café under its own name, the Bosphorus at its feet. Walk the shore, buy a lot on the hill, build on it.

Get the highlights.

Bebek Bay from above, from Rumeli Hisarı to Arnavutköy.
Bebek Mosque, Mimar Kemaleddin, 1913.
Along the shore, every café under its real name.
META PULS HOF. Boutiques around the plaza.
A seat for every ticket at the Beşiktaş Stadium.
The Bosphorus, long after dark.

Bebek Mosque

Mimar Kemaleddin built it in 1913, in the First National style, where a mosque had stood since 1726. A square hall of cut limestone, a dome on four half-domes, and the ferry pier just in front.

III

The shore

Cevdet Paşa Caddesi follows the water from Rumeli Hisarı to Arnavutköy: the old quay, Bebek Parkı, the plane trees and the lamps, the boats at their moorings.

The cafés of Bebek

At dusk the terraces fill and the windows light up along the bay. Every name above the door is the one OpenStreetMap gives it.

V

META PULS HOF

The shopping hall of the Beşiktaş district: boutiques on every side of a plaza, with fountains and café terraces, a step from the stadium.

Boutiques

Furnished to the last shelf: the oak blocks, the lit walls, the pieces on display.

VI

VII

ASTRA CINEMA

On the roof of the HOF, a cinema and a concert hall: 144 leather recliners before the screen, 540 velvet seats before the band shell. A seat for every ticket, the film on the screen, the show on the LED wall.

ASTRA LIVE

The concert hall on the roof: the curved rows, the stage, the light.

VIII

Rumeli Hisarı

Mehmed II raised it in 1452, in about four months, where the strait runs narrowest. Its walls and towers climb the hill at the north edge of our world.

Gece

Then the lamps along the quay, the floodlit fortress and the two bridges strung with light. The same shore, open all night.
